Soon-to-be parents are often reading up on things to do before the baby comes or right after the baby comes home. However, we don’t have to focus solely on things surrounding the baby. In fact, if you only focus on the baby, you’ll have a house full of chores and tasks that don’t get done because life becomes too hectic. Before you settle in to washing the baby clothes, setting up the nursery, and ensuring your hospital bag is packed, be sure to get prepared around your house with these six non-baby related things to do.

1. Get organised.

When you have a little one, things get hectic, which means being organized is very important. Before your little one comes, be sure to organize your home. Go through closets, attics, and other storage areas and get all these items in an organized manner. In addition, you should also organize file cabinets so you can easily find the information you need. By having a house that’s organized, you’ll have one less thing to worry about after the baby is born.

2. Clean.

Your home is going to see a lot of visitors once the baby comes along, and you’ll want to ensure it’s ready for all these people. Do a good thorough cleaning of your home before the baby comes so that you aren’t stressing about trying to clean countertops or wash floors when dealing with a newborn. You and your partner should spend a weekend doing a good thorough cleaning of your home. Get up towards the ceiling and down along the baseboards. This will keep your home looking its best for a while and provide you with a little peace of mind after the baby comes.

3. Tackle little projects.

If you have little projects around your home that you want done, now is the time to do it. For instance, if you want to get new carpet, switch out a front door, or paint some new areas of the home, then do this before your child is born. This will ensure you don’t have any other things on your plate once the baby arrives, and it ensures you get all the dirt and debris from projects out of the house before you bring the baby home. Plus, if any of these little projects would have posed a danger to your little one, you’ll certainly want to get it done sooner rather than later.

4. Get rid of junk.

Everyone has items sitting around the house that belongs in the trash, in someone else’s possession, or just in another location. If you have a garage, shed, or yard full of items you don’t use, now is the time to get rid of them. After all, your baby will come with a lot of stuff, so you’ll want to have all the extra storage space you can get. Do the things you love to do or just plan a nice little romantic getaway with one another. Do this often too to help keep the romance alive and well.

6. Plan for the future.

If you have yet to make a will or start a savings account, now is the time to do so. All of these things take time and planning, and you want to ensure you have everything all figured out before your child is born. Talk openly with your partner about your hopes and dreams for the future, and then work together to create all the necessary paperwork or accounts needed to make these future goals a reality.

Your baby is going to be the most important person in your life, but you have responsibilities now that need your attention before he or she arrives. By doing the things on this list, you’ll have an easier time focusing on just your baby.
