Prom night is one of the most exciting events of your life, but it’s also an incredibly significant milestone as you close this chapter and prepare for new adventures. After years of schooling, you finally have an opportunity to celebrate all that which you’ve achieved- or celebrate the fact that you may never have to take an academic exam again!
You and your friends have all been daydreaming about this moment for long enough, it’s been the light at at end of the longest tunnel – the special night that you can get glammed up for your prom and party the night away, before heading out into the adult world.
In order to experience the perfect night, you absolutely must feel like a million dollars. Being dressed in fabulous attire from head to toe will ensure that you feel worthy of that red carpet and fancy car. You want to make sure it’s an unforgettable night and that you have lots of gorgeous pictures to look back on, so you’ll need to find the perfect prom dress to suit your style. So where do you begin with finding some prom dresses that suit you?
Here are a few tips for you to take on board as you embark on shopping for prom.
Go for a timeless look
Make sure you pick a prom dress that flatters your figure and suits your colouring so it looks timeless and you’re not left looking back at your prom pictures thinking ‘why?!’ While it will be tempting to go for something that’s vogue this month, with an event like prom, remember that fashions fade but classic remains classic.
Use your assets
If you’re tall, show off your height with a maxi dress. If you’re petite, get the pins out – a shorter dress will flatter you more.
Don’t buy the first dress you see
In terms of textures and embellishments, the world really is your oyster. From tulle skirts to intricate lace and sparkly sequins, our advice to you is to try lots on! Even if you’ve had your heart set on a very specific design for months (or years) step outside of your comfort zone and try on a few other styles too – you might surprise yourself with what you end up falling for. It’s not often you shop for prom-style dresses so it’s unlikely that you’ll know what kind of fancy dress actually suits you. Enjoy it!
Remember your undies!
What goes under the dress is just as important as what goes with it! Will you need a strapless bra, some stick-on cups or a thong? Is the dress supportive enough to forgo a bra? And will you be comfortable wearing (or not wearing) that kind of underwear? These are all important things to remember before purchasing your gown.
Pick the perfect shopping companion
Make sure you take someone who you trust shopping with you, whether that’s your best friend, your mum or an older sister. Whoever you choose as your shopping buddy, make sure you know they’ll be honest with you (in a nice way!) and let you know what works for you and what doesn’t. You want to look your best at your prom and the people closest to you will know more than anyone what suits you and what doesn’t.
Consider hair & accessories
If you feel more comfortable with your hair down, consider this when you try on your prom dress. Will details around the neckline interfere with your down-do? Maybe you have a special necklace you want to show off – if so, you’ll have to wear a sweetheart, scoop or surplice neckline avoiding higher necklines.
Communicate with your friends
Make sure you and your bestie aren’t getting the same dress – unless twinning is your thing, of course! If you have a date for the night, you’ll want to check that you’re not going to clash. Let him know what colours you’re going for incase he surprises you with a corsage.
Take on board these tips and you’re sure to be the belle of the ball! Happy prom night!
