Creating a kid’s bedroom is quite different to creating an adult’s bedroom. While adults want somewhere to relax, children want somewhere they can have fun and spark their imagination! That being said, it shouldn’t really be too stimulating, as they won’t be able to sleep. You need to find the right balance, so it can take some thought and effort. There are lots of things you can do, but the tips in this guide are a few of the best out there!
- Choose Soothing Colors
If you have children who struggle to sleep, the best thing you can do is select soothing colors for the bedroom. This will ensure that they aren’t too stimulated and they can drift off to sleep much easier. Soothing colors include shades of lavender and green. Anything too bright can wake them up! It shouldn’t be too much of a problem if your kids don’t fight sleep, but having kids like that can be rare!
- Chalkboard Paint
Chalkboard paint is an amazing invention that will hopefully satisfy kid’s urges to draw all over the walls. If you paint a wall or two with this paint, your kids will be able to go crazy with chalks and create works of art all of their own. Just make sure they know to avoid the other walls!
- Create a Reading Space
Introducing kids to literature is one of the best things you can possibly do for them. By creating a cosy reading space, you’ll both have somewhere to sit when it’s story time. Make sure you include low lighting, comfy seating, and an organized book case to take care of all of their favorite books. This is one of my favorite ideas to improve a kid’s bedroom!
- Office Space
If you can give your kids their own bit of ‘office space’ in their room, they’ll have the perfect place to do homework and even create their own projects. All you need is a desk and some organized drawers and they’re ready to go! They’ll feel seriously grown up if you include things like this in their room.
- Dress Up a Nightstand
One of the most fun ways you can decorate a kids room is by using your imagination. Think outside the box a little and use things in ways you wouldn’t usually think of. For instance, you know your little girl’s boring nightstand? Why not decorate it with a frilly pink tutu? It’ll look very original and way more expensive than it really is.
- Make Them a Den
If there’s one thing your average kid loves, it’s a good den to play and hide in. Whether you have girls, boys, or both, they’ll love their very own den! You can buy these ready made or attempt to build your own if you’d like to save some cash.
- A Unique Bed
Kids can make do with your bog standard bed, but they’d much prefer a bed that excites their imagination. Little boys love race car beds, and little girls will love a bed that makes them feel like a princess. You can even get beds these days that double up as miniature play parks! They can be expensive, so make sure it’ll be a while before your child grows out of the bed. It’s also a safe bet to look at latex mattresses to keep the bed protected and comfortable.
- Get Arty
If you fancy yourself as a bit of an artist, why not get arty on your children’s walls? You could paint a mural of their favorite TV characters and cartoons. You could even just make something up as you go along, perhaps a jungle scene or an under the sea theme. Think of the things your child loves and then go from there.
- Wall Decals
If like me, you’re not that much of an artist, wall decals can be the perfect way to funk up a child’s wall without going mad with a paintbrush. They’re really easy to apply and come with instructions so you know exactly what to do.
- Patterns
If you want your child’s room to be a really fun place to be, then include lots of pattern. You can do this via the curtains, the bed linen, and more. It’s easy if you have a neutral base color, as you can then build on it with your patterns in whatever colors you like. This makes it much easier to change up as the years go on.
- Decorate the Ceiling
Why not decorate the ceiling? It could make bedtime extra soothing and exciting if you paint some clouds, or even the night sky on the ceiling. These days, you can even get glow in the dark stars that can help to create a relaxing effect in a child’s bedroom. It’s up to you what you do with it – flying pigs is another fun idea of mine!
- No Electricals
Ideally, your kids bedroom will be a room full of magic and wonderment without including electricals. By allowing your kids to have TVs, radio, iPads, and the like in their room, you’ll keep them awake. They don’t even need to be using them; their presence has been proven to interrupt sleep. The last thing you want is to interrupt your child’s precious sleeping pattern! Make their room exciting enough without all of that stuff, and only have books in there for them to read. If you fail to do this, your kids could end up cranky in the morning and begin falling behind at school. The earlier you keep electricals out of their room, the better.
I hope you love these 12 tips to create an amazing bedroom for your kids. They are some of my favorite out there, but of course they don’t stop there. You can find so many more tips if you continue your search. If you’re confused about how to do anything, there will be lots of tutorials to help you too. Good luck on your project!

Some great tips, I love the idea of blackboard paint! #homeetc
such a fun idea isn’t it?
These are great tips. I’ve seen all about chalkboard paint and think it looks fab! Also love the idea of decorating the ceiling. Zach’s room is pretty spectacular but I feel that twinkly stars on the ceiling could be a winner! #HomeEtc
Oh I wish they had blackboard paint when my girls were little, they would’ve loved that. I like it on a kitchen wall too to jot down all those reminders. I love children’s bedrooms and letting them insert a bit of their personality. Some great advice here x #HomeEtc
Oh my goodness, I wish I’d come across this list before I put my boys’ rooms together. It’s amazing. I always had glow in the dark stars on my ceiling when I was younger. Loved them!
