5 Ways to Improve Your Sleep & Bedtime Comfort

We all want to get a good night’s sleep, but sadly, one in three people in the UK struggles to sleep properly. When you’re a busy mum like me, not getting enough sleep isn’t an option. With little ones pumped full of energy, us parents need every minute of sleep that we can get. Sometimes, however, we just can’t seem to drift off.

While there are many causes of insomnia, a big one is a bed that isn’t as comfortable as it could be. If your mattress is too soft or your bedding isn’t quite right, the chances are that you won’t be able to get a good night’s sleep.

5 Ways to Improve Your Sleep

To help you ensure that your bed is as comfortable (and cosy) as it could be, here are five tips that I swear by:

  1. Replace that Mattress

When it comes to an uncomfortable bed, the most common culprit is the mattress. If your mattress is eight or more years old or you’re tossing and turning all night, the chances are that it needs replacing. When it comes to choosing a new mattress, there’s no one-size fits all rule, you might even want to check out a Sleep Number bed alternative. It’s a case of shopping around until you find the perfect match for your (and your partner’s if applicable) needs.

While many people swear by the comfort of memory foam mattresses, they’re incredibly soft, and so, don’t work for everyone. Others are crazy about air bed mattresses, like these two chamber air beds. When it comes to picking a new mattress, it’s all about personal preference. The most important thing is to find a design that works well for you and gives you the right level of comfort.

  1. Add a Mattress Topper

If your mattress is the problem, but a new one isn’t in your price range right now, don’t stress. Instead of buying a whole new mattress, invest in a topper. These are amazing – they can change a lumpy, uncomfortable bed into somewhere that gives the highest level of comfort.

Again, like when buying a mattress, make sure to choose one that works for you. You will find that some toppers are soft and others hard – think about what works for your back.

  1. Be Choosy about the Sheets and Blankets

When it comes to picking bed linen, be choosy about what you get. You might think that bed linen isn’t worth investing in, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Nice quality sheets and blankets can be expensive, but the level of comfort that they offer makes them worth the cost.

The best linen to opt for is 100 percent cotton – polyester blends might be cheaper, but they’re nowhere near as nice. If you get warm at night, steer clear of anything that’s not cotton, as it won’t breathe properly. For cool, crisp bed linen, cotton is definitely the way to go.

  1. Pick the Best Pillows

You know how when you stay in a fancy hotel, you are given the choice of various pillow types? Well, when it comes to picking pillows for your bed, you need to give yourself the same choice. Pillows aren’t one size fits all, there are various types – we all have our own preferences.

From super soft feather pillows to memory foam designs that mould to your head, there are so many options to choose from. Some pillows can absorb heat to keep you cool while others hold heat to keep you warm. Be choosy about your pillows, and trust me, you’ll get a much better night’s sleep.

  1. Select a Fantastic Duvet

Just like when choosing your pillows, when it comes to picking a duvet, you need to give yourself lots of choice. You also need to have more than one duvet – one for winter and one for summer. Otherwise, you’ll either sweat like mad in summer or freeze in winter.

When picking a duvet, look for a design with natural filling, such as duck feather. It’s also important to opt for a style that’s breathable, as else you’ll end up getting too hot. Whatever you do, avoid synthetic fillings at all costs.

Making your bed more comfortable is a foolproof way to ensure that you’re getting all the beauty sleep that you need.
