Of all the rooms in your home, your bedroom should be one of the spaces that you love the most. It’s your private space, one that you don’t have to share with family members or visitors; it’s somewhere that’s just for you, and so, it should be a space that you are head over heels in love with.
However, if you are not a fan of your bedroom, then there’s a problem, especially if you can’t put your finger on what the issue is. The room itself is a good size, it gets plenty of natural light, and it has all of the right pieces of furniture in, but you still don’t love it – what’s the problem?
The chances are if you don’t love your bedroom, it’s because you’ve made one of the below blunders. So, have a read, see if anything rings a bell, and then make the necessary changes, so that you once again love your bedroom.
- Implementing a colour scheme that’s too bright
Colour schemes are incredibly personal, with each of us having our own tastes. That being said, for bedrooms, bright and bold colour schemes don’t tend to be all that successful. Firstly because they make it harder to relax and fall asleep, and secondly because they’re too ‘in your face.’
Your bedroom is meant to be a relaxing retreat from the world. The best colours to decorate your bedroom in are natural tones – think sea foam blue, moss green, earth pink, and sand. This is because studies have shown that natural hues tend to be the most calming and relaxing, hence why most spas are decorated in them.
- Not getting the lighting right
Another reason that you may dislike your bedroom is because you haven’t managed to get the lighting right. When it comes to picking lighting for your bedroom, you want to ensure that you get it spot on.
For best results, combine various lighting sources, such as an overhead lamp, fairy lights, and a table lamp, that way you can choose what to have on, when. So, say you’re reading, a table lamp would probably be satisfactory. Or, say you’re dozing while watching a movie, fairy lights would probably be all that you’d want on. For a beautifully lit bedroom, layer your lighting.
- Picking a mattress that isn’t right for you
This may not impact the look of the space, but it can affect how you feel about your bedroom. Having a bed that’s uncomfortable can be a real nightmare, as it can make getting a good night’s sleep almost impossible.
If you’re not happy with your mattress, one option is to replace it, or if you can’t afford to do that right now, how about getting a foam mattress topper instead? That way you can up the comfort of your bed, without having to spend a fortune. Increase your bedtime comfort even more by treating yourself to some new, luxury bed linen.
- Having too much stuff
If your bedroom is a cluttered mess, it’s going to impact how you feel about it. The fact is that a cluttered space isn’t a relaxing space, so if your bedroom is a cluttered mess, you need to do something about it.
Spend some time going through your old stuff, getting rid of anything that you no longer need. It might take time, but you’ll feel better for it and will love your bedroom more because of it.

Our 4yr old is still in our room until we have saved enough for the loft conversion for the teenager. I can’t wait until I can have a pale grey & white bedroom with lot’s of lovely throws, cushions & textures. And not have to worry about my make up being smeared on the walls!!
