If you want to start the new year with a trip abroad, then a European ski trip can be a great option.
With so many world-class ski resorts in Europe, we in the UK, don’t have too far to travel to get to them. Making them a much more accessible trip than you might think. The snow is amazing and there are resorts for all your needs; family-friendly, party towns, or more relaxes options. So here are some of the best ski resorts in Europe that are worth a visit. Have you been to any of them?
Ischgl, Austria
Although it can often be overlooked sue to other popular resorts in Austria like Innsbruck, Ischgl offers great nightlife and high-quality pistes for those that have skied before. It is a popular are known for its parties, with some of the best apres ski around.
The ski area lacks a glacier but the resorts altitude pretty much guarantees enough snow cover for a good ski season (which can be up until the end of May). There are an amazing 45 lifts and they are are constantly being updated. The most recent change is that one of the four-chair lifts has been replaced with six chairs, and even includes heated seats and hoods. Definitely worth the ski pass fee!
Wengen, Switzerland
If you’re looking for a family-friendly resort, then the Wengen area of Switzerland could be for you. Though you’ll have missed the boat now, it is a place that loves to celebrate Christmas and there are plenty of festive decorations and markets to explore in the area, along with the varied ski resorts.
Val Thorens, France
Val Thorens is a purpose-built resort that is not only the highest resort in the French Trois Vallées ski area, but the highest in Europe. So if you’re after altitude that can only be achieved in the Americas usually, then this could be the place for you. With such altitude means plenty of snowfall starting from November right through to April.
Monterosa Ski, Italy
This is a stunning area to enjoy winter sports, as it is an unspoilt area, right by the part that divides Italy from Switzerland. There are three small resorts to choose from in the area, as there are three valleys that the Monterosa area covers.
A key attraction for experts is a cable car to the area’s high point, as it offers no way down other than by snow. There are some pretty gnarly runs too, so best for those with experience and those that know what they’re doing. There are some more mellow runs, more on the Gressoney side, but it still wouldn’t be the best resort area for beginners.
Obergurgl, Austria
Obergurgl is one of the highest ski villages in Europe, and it is located near to the famous winter sports area of Innsbruck. So you know that it is in one of the best areas to get guaranteed snow, and plenty of it. A new resort opened up there only two years ago (with no expense spared), and there is the Kirchenkarbahn gondola there too, which is home to a fancy mountain restaurant and a motorbike museum if you’re looking for other things to do too.
Have you got any trips planned this year? Have you been skiing or to any of these resorts before? Would love to hear what you think.
