Review of Birthday Cake from A Piece of Cake, Kent

Christmas seems like such a long time ago, but really it was less than a month ago! But before we had all of the Christmas festivities, our Max had his 8th birthday! I can’t quite believe that it was eight years ago that this happened and I became a mother. I know they say that time flies, but when you have children and are marking every milestone, it really does zoom past. Max’s birthday weekend was a fun weekend of celebrations, and of course, you need to have a cake to celebrate with.

Max’s actual birthday on the 1st December was a combination of family time for his birthday, as well as his baptism, so a cake to feed us all, was a must. I have been following A Piece of Cake on Instagram for a while now, and as my in-laws are based in Kent (Maidstone, to be precise), it was handy for my mother-in-law to collect the cake and bring it over on the day. As it was Max’s birthday and his baptism, Max was keen to have a birthday cake just as he wanted it, rather than a ‘baptism’ cake, and Kim, from A Piece of Cake created an absolute masterpiece.

I can remember my children collecting and playing with Pokemon and here we are years later and Max, age just 8, is into the same and was super excited to have a Pokemon cake. A big shout out to @luluscakekitchen for the inspiration that led to Max’s cake. 7 inch chocolate cake layers filled and covered with caramel buttercream and topped with a deco melts drip. What lifted my heart when this cake was collected was the absolute joy that my good friend, and Max’s grandmother, felt when she saw this cake just because she knew Max was going to love it, thank you Suzanne, it’s times like this that make me glad I can brighten someone’s day just with a cake. Grateful to @tylerrosedesigns for Max’s cake topper and Pokemon images, they were perfect. xxxx #8isgreat #ldsctr #baptismday #pokemon #instacake #lovecake #decomelts #cakeoftheday #tylerrosedesigns #birthdaycake #weddingcake #kentbaker #maidstone #homebaker #sweettreat #dessert #celebrationcake #localbusiness #cupcakes #cake pops #apieceofcakekent

I shared an image of the kind of thing that he was after (a Pokemon cake), and what Kim created looked incredible. The attention to detail was just incredible! There was even a Pokemon toy on top of the cake, and the personalised cake topper that was made especially for Max, rather than just a generic ‘happy birthday’ topper, was really special. It just shows how much Kim cares about the cakes that she creates and wants to make her customers happy; they are definitely made with time and attention, just as you would want it. Max was so pleased with the cake, so that is the main thing!

As they say with a cake though, the proof in the pudding is in the eating. So what did the cake taste like?

Max chose a chocolate sponge with a Nutella filling, and the cake did not disappoint. It tasted great, and was really sweet and moist. The frosting was yummy too, and I really liked the ‘drip’ element of the cake, with the yellow chocolate. The added features like the sweets, lollies, and additional chocolates were lovely too.

The good news is that Kim also makes cupcakes, cake jars, cake pops, and brownies, as well as cakes, so there are plenty of options for you. If you’re not located in Kent, then she does send trays of brownies and blondies in the post – winning! Kim has a variety of options for cake flavours, frostings, and fillings, and did ask us about food allergies. Through the booking process we were asked how many people there would be for the cake, and it was definitely the right size. Kim knows her stuff, and is a really talented baker.

When it’s your baby girls first birthday and three days later it’s your birthday what do you do? Well you order beautiful cakesicles AND a big cake!!!! I like your style Kirsty. 7 inch moist and light vanilla cake layers filled and covered with white chocolate and raspberry buttercream. Topped off with chocolate covered strawberries, homemade macaroons (oh dear, they are so finickity and so hard to get right, three batches and only one or two good denough to use), meringue kisses and some chocolates. Sprinkled with my own mix of pink, white and gold sprinkles, a touch or two of gold leaf and mini balloons finish off this cake perfectly. The cakesicles were vanilla and chocolate cake with white or milk chocolate and sprinkled with my special mix and a touch of gold leaf. xxxx #instacake #cakeoftheday #birthdaycake #weddingcake #kentbaker #maidstone #homebaker #sweettreat #cakesicles #dessert #celebrationcake #localbusiness #cupcakes #cakepops #apieceofcakekent
