Creating a Child-Friendly Living Room

With spring just around the corner I’ve been taking a leaf out of Marie Kondo’s book and sorting out my house and finding things that ‘spark joy’. One thing in particular that I wanted to change was the living room to make it a more cohesive, multifunctional family space where we can all spend time together.

Here are a few of my ideas to making a de-cluttered, family friendly living room.

Stylish Toy Storage

If you’re lucky enough to have a dedicated playroom for your children then I’m super jealous! The kids like to keep some toys downstairs but let’s be honest, little plastic children’s toys don’t bring joy to my life but my kids love them! A perfect solution would be to find some cute storage that looks good in my living room and hides the toys away. I love this Ikea storage solution: stylish, sleek, personalised and there are boxes designed to fit inside so it’s easy to keep tidy and organised.

Cushions, Cushions and More Cushions

I love snuggling up on the sofa with hot chocolate and a blanket. Snuggly blankets and cushions are great for keeping warm in winter, cuddling as a family and the cushions can provide extra seating for little bottoms. When I’m feeling crafty, I have been known to whip up some cushion covers of my own. What’s great is that you can change your colour scheme, add some crazy patterns or even each family member could have their very own cushion.

Easy Clean Flooring

One of the BIGGEST changes to our living room has been getting laminate flooring. At first, I was worried it wouldn’t be warm and cosy but I didn’t need to worry about that at all. These days, you can get such good quality laminate flooring so that it doesn’t feel cold under foot and a nice big rug is always a nice finishing touch to any room.

When we had a light carpet, we had to make sure everybody took their shoes off before they came anywhere near it and it was so easy to drag mud and dirty through the house. Dust and crumbs got hidden away in the pile, and even vacuuming didn’t get it out.

I love now simple and un-fussy it is now. It’s so easy to sweep up any crumbs or dirt and I can actually wash it to keep it looking pristine. It’s made such a difference to how we live in the living room. The kids can come and go as they please and I am so much less stressed about them eating or making a mess because it’s so easy to clean up after them!

Now my living room has been ‘Konmaried’ I want to do it in other rooms of the house as well. Making everything in my living room more purposeful has really made it a much nicer place to spend time as a family.
