DIY Tops All Beginners Need To Know

Thinking of trying your hand at some DIY? It looks easy enough when the home and DIY influencers pop their little videos up on social media, doesn’t it? After all, if they can do it, anyone can. In reality, anyone can try DIY; however, for beginners, there is a lot to learn before you start knocking walls down and renovating entire houses simply because you saw someone else do it.

Let’s take a quick look at some ways to prepare for undertaking DIY projects, whether it’s a small task like holding a door handle or a more extensive job such as carrying out one of those epic IKEA hacks for storage.

Watch Tutorials

Full tutorials from DIY professionals are a goldmine for beginners, guiding you through each step of the process. Unlike the quick videos on social media, these comprehensive guides provide the exact steps you need, helping you understand the scope of the work and assess your ability to complete the task. Remember, starting small and working your way up to more complex activities is always better. But having instructions, no matter how simple the task may seem, can empower you to complete it correctly and safely.

Have The Right Tools and Equipment

You should never start your DIY tasks without having the right tools for the task at hand and maybe some extras to account for mistakes. This means you don’t need to compromise or stop halfway through to get things finished. You have what you need with you so you can move through the process easier and complete things to the highest standards. For example, if you are hanging drywall, you need the right drywall screw to secure your plasterboard or wooden studs, and if you are putting together a new cabinet, you need the right screws for the type of wood you’re using and thickness so you can ensure the build is stable and secure. Make sure you have the right tools for the task. Even if you can’t afford high-end tools, you can find alternatives or ask family and friends if you can borrow them if they own what you need so you can start with confidence.

Stay Safe

Any type of DIY project needs some form of safety equipment, either masks so you don’t breathe in fumes, gloves to protect your hands, or safety goggles to protect your eyes. Look at the type of safety equipment you need to ensure everyone working on the project is safe from harm and understands the risks. Ensure you are working in a space that allows for the safety you need too, i.e. ventilation for working with paints or products that give off fumes in a secure area away from kids or pets, and if you are using tools like electric saws or other cutting equipment.

Allow Time

For beginners, DIY can take much longer than the recommended time. This is because you are working slowly through the steps as you are not experienced in this area. It is natural. So, only start tasks when you are confident you have the time to complete them. Look at how long it should take, double it if you feel you might need to and only get started as and when you can dedicate the time so you do not need to rush or will be relied on to make mistakes.
