As you know, I’ve been putting some extra effort into regaining the old me. I’m working quite hard at rediscovering the girl that used to be. A lot has changed in my life over the last few years, and I was worried that I had lost her for a while there! Things are going well so far, but it’s got me thinking about how my home now could do with a bit of a revamp too.
Being a Mummy and wife means I have to be a multitasker at all times. Whatever household chore I’m doing, I still need to have an eye on the kids. That’s not easy, especially in my kitchen. Because I’m a Mum I am always on the lookout for hazards and dangers. Us Mothers really can’t help it! And we’re really good at it. I think that’s why I’ve been dreaming about making some changes around the house.
I love to cook. I’m one of those wannabe chefs who spends time in the kitchen concocting weird and wonderful meals for the family to enjoy. I also love cooking for my friends. Entertaining is something I would love to do more. But being in the kitchen means I’m missing out on all the social interaction. Something needs to change.
My dream kitchen isn’t too far away from what I have but I think the set up could change slightly. Sometimes I think I need to send my sink setup to kitchen rehab to get it straightened out! It’s not in the place I want it, and it is definitely beyond me to move it. I would need to change all the cupboards around and buy a new worktop to fit in the new shape. And the shape isn’t quite right for how I like to work in the kitchen either.
When you’re talking about a complete redesign like I am, then suddenly all sorts of ideas start drifting in. What if I knock down the wall and make it more open plan? What if I get an island with bar stools so my friends and family can sit and chat with me while I cook? What if I got one of those cool extendable taps so I could hose things off easier? The list goes on and on.
A dream kitchen for me would be incredibly functional with integrated storage solutions for all my favourite things. Soft close cabinets, pot hangers, knife blocks, boiler taps and more would make my life so much easier. Who knows? I may even become a better chef! So where would I start? I would have to start with that annoying sink, and design the rest of the room around it. I rinse everything off before it goes in the dishwasher, but I don’t want to have to cross the kitchen to do it.
Don’t get me wrong. I do love my kitchen. And I am really grateful for everything I have in it. But sometimes, I just want the kids where I can see them. I want to know they’re safe. And I want to be a part of the pre-dinner conversation at my parties! What would your dream kitchen be like?
