When you have children and become a parent, it’s one of the best things in the world! There is nothing more special than watching your children grow up and blossom, as they learn new things each year. We bet you can remember their first word, the first time they crawled and walked and all the things in between.
As your children get older, your house will be in a constant state of change. Once, we bet your home was a calm place, with candles being lit and the furniture in pristine condition – a calm oasis, some might say. But when you have children, this all changes and for the better, as the more changes that happen, the more exciting your home is for your children.
So the question is, how do you keep making your home more exciting for your children? There are so many things that you can do. In their bedroom, you can get a bed with a trundle, decorate the walls with childish things and get themed furniture. In the garden, a slide and trampoline are a must and there are plenty of changes that you can make in your living room as well.
To help give you some inspiration, we have put together our guide on ten things you can do to make your home more exciting for your children.
Changes in their bedroom
Themed furniture
Children love themed furniture, it makes their bedroom a lot more exciting and a place they want to spend their time in. In your children’s room, you can get a themed table which they can paint and draw on, a themed wardrobe and drawer to hang and fold their clothes in or a themed chair for them to read their book on – you’ll be amazed at the different options available. The best thing to do is visit your local furniture store and see what options they have available, this way you get to see it in person. If you have Instagram or TikTok, both can also be a good place to look for inspiration as many influencers post about their themed bedrooms for their kids.
Exciting bed
For children, their bed is one of the most used things (it’s the same for adults when you think about it). They go to bed and sleep on it every day for at least 12 hours a day, so why not make it exciting for them? Instead of having a standard single, you could upgrade to a bed with a trundle and this bed could be themed at the same time. This will make bedtime more enjoyable for them and it gives you additional storage solutions, for all the toys they collect over the years. For parents who have two children, having a bunk bed will create additional space, children love rotating from top to bottom bunk and it means your children can share a room, freeing up another room, to be used for something different.
Decorate the walls
It’s fairly standard for a children’s room to be painted in one colour, which is neutral, as this means it’s easy to fix, as it gets damaged from wear and tear (or your children have accidentally drawn over it with crayon, it happens to us all). But, that’s a bit boring and makes the room look the same as every other child. Instead, consider redecorating the walls with a themed wallpaper. You could buy wallpaper of their favourite football team, a movie they love watching or an animal they adore the most. Wallpaper doesn’t have to be expensive and it’s fun to learn how to put it up if you’ve never done this before. Pinterest is a great place to look if you are after some inspiration for children’s wallpaper. If you don’t want to redecorate every room, you could have a feature wall and wallpaper the one wall so make a change and help make the room more exciting.
Changes in the living room
Have a dedicated play space
Your living room is a room that is used by both adults and children, which can make it hard to make drastic changes, as you don’t want it to feel too childish or adult-ish. Making changes requires a lot of compromise and one way to do this is to have a dedicated play place for your children. Separating areas of your living room gives your children a space they can properly enjoy and get messy in, whilst on the other side, you can keep tidy and a place you can relax in.
Display your children’s artwork on the walls
You can celebrate your children’s work by displaying it on your walls. Create some wall space where you can hang your little ones’ work, as they finish it. They will be proud of this themselves and it means you can store it for the years to come. If you buy nice frames, this can be a good way to make the display more presentable, instead of having paper stuck to the wall. This is also a nice activity, where you can go out and ask your children to pick the frames they will put their artwork in.
Indoor climbing wall
Ok, hear us out before you think this idea is bonkers! We spoke about having dedicated play spaces in your living room and as part of having a dedicated space, why not install your own indoor climbing wall? As long as your children aren’t too old and they don’t weigh too much, your walls will be able to take their weight (as long as it’s a real wall). Installing an indoor climbing wall is a lot easier than you may think initially and it’s fairly affordable. When the weather isn’t nice outside, it’s a fun thing your children can do, which will keep them entertained for a period of time. If you don’t have space in your living room, this could be installed in their bedroom or in a playroom.
Changes in the garden
Create a herb garden for your children
It’s a well-known fact that children learn better when doing it themselves, instead of having you do it for them. In your garden, you could create a herb garden that your children can plant and look after. By doing it themselves, they can learn how to do it and have fun at the same time. It is also very rewarding when they can collect the herbs and put them in your dinner, as they will know they grew them themselves.
Trampoline
Do you remember when you were younger, you would have a trampoline in your garden or be excited to go around your friend’s house to use theirs? You can have hours of fun on the trampoline, learning to do different flips or playing silly games like Crack the Egg. A trampoline is a big purchase, which makes it ideal for a birthday or Christmas present if either is approaching. And the best thing about a trampoline is that it doesn’t matter what age your children are, as they are ideal for all ages.
Slide
Having a slide to accompany a trampoline makes the garden that bit more fun (If you have the space for both). Children love slides and they often come attached to some sort of wooden climbing wall. They come in a variety of sizes and will amuse them for many hours, especially when the weather is nice outside. Slides don’t need much upkeep and most children’s stores sell them, meaning you can have one delivered the next day or within three to five days. When buying a slide, make sure it’s well built, has good reviews and will last the test of time, as your children will grow up and get bigger.
Sandpit
The research shows a sandpit benefits your children in many ways. It helps them with their creativity, improves their motor skills, encourages them to be social and a sandpit is fun! When you go back to your childhood, like a trampoline and a slide, we bet you spent many hours playing with sand, whether at home or down the beach. You can buy sandpits as a dedicated piece of equipment, or you can buy one as part of a larger set, such as having swings attached (which is another item that will make your home more exciting for your children).
We are sure we have given you plenty of things to think about. As you can see from the above, there are so many ways to make your home more exciting for your children. Different changes will have different costs attached to them, so take a look through them and see which ones would suit you best.
What changes are you going to make to your home for your children? Are there any changes that you would recommend that we haven’t included in our guide above? Will you be trying any of the changes we have suggested? Let us know in the comment box below, we look forward to hearing from you.
