7 Ways to Protect Your Home While You’re away on Vacation

A man works for lifetime for what holds most important for him i.e. a car and a wonderful house in a good neighborhood. A house provides you shelter and security and your family turns it into a home. Building your own home is always a dream and as the say “The house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer; the house allows one to dream in peace.” No matter wherever you go in the World, your heart always try to take you back to home because it is the only place where you find yourself true solace and peace of mind.

Building a home is also a charming experience as you observe brick by brick construction of it. For People who observe construction of their house by themselves usually take care of each and everything so that when it finishes, provides lifetime durability. They take care of its exterior as well as interior similarly but also have a keen work on making it secure. Especially when you live in a neighborhood, where security issue, theft and robbery are common.
When I moved to Perth three years back, I decided to build my own home instead of buying one. I consulted a local construction company to take care of the construction. It took four months to complete the construction and meanwhile I personally looked after the construction site. Along the durability of the home what I made sure was the security of home. My Parents live in Melbourne so every year I spend the summer holidays with them along with my kids. So securing the home was important as we would be away for a couple of weeks every year.

I instructed the construction company to put heavier and durable wood for doors inside and stainless steel for the gate and for good long-lasting locks a couple of famous nearby locksmiths were consulted. One of them provided us with the required items. Also a security company was called in to set a well-equipped security system including high-tech cameras and alarms. After we moved in I took care of the security of the home while we were used to be away for vacations, for that I made a To-Do-List for securing the home, which is as follows:

1)
Hold Your Mail
A huge pile of mail on the front doorstep, or envelopes pouring out your mail slot is an instant tip-off that no one’s home. If you’ll be gone for more than a few days, go to the post office to place a hold on your mail

2) Create the Illusion of Someone Home
Beyond setting your lights on a timer, you can also set the television and radio on a timer to create the typical noise and flickering lights of an average family home at night. But wait, that’s not all! Leave a car in the driveway.

3) Keep the word
Never, ever announce your departure for vacation to anyone. Though you can trust your friendly neighbor with this.

4) Trust a Friend
Give your vacation contact info and a spare key to at least one friend or neighbor. That way, they’ll know how to contact you in case of emergency.

5) Advertise Your Security
especially when you’re away, it can be a great idea to advertise your security measures.

6) Unplug
Unplug all unnecessary appliances (except those on timers, of course) to protect your home from an electrical fire or power surge.

7) Safe-Keep Your Valuables
lock up jewelry, the deed to your home, wills, and any other valuables or sensitive documents in a fire-proof safe.
