I love the new year and all that is brings. A resolution to do new things and set new goals. I find it really refreshing and motivating. One of the things that more and more of us choose to do in the new year, is to change our living situation. Around this time of year, especially towards spring, is the most common time that we would put our house up for sale if we were wanting to move. We are most likely to do DIY and redecorate at these times too. I am certainly leaning towards the former – could 2017 be a big move for us?
If like me you’re thinking of making a few changes to where you live this year, here are some ideas of things that will be popular, to give you a bit of inspiration.
Hygge
This seems to be a bit of a popular buzzword of late, especially if you are on the Instagram and Pinterest scene. Pronounced as ‘hoo-ga,’ it is a Danish concept about basically being cosy. So it is all about thick cable knit throw blankets, scented candles, warm socks, and hibernating until the warmer spring weather arrives.
Bringing the Outdoors In
You don’t always have to repaint a wall or upholster chairs to make a change to a room. One trend that is going to be mega populate this year (if Pinterest is anything to go by), is bringing the outdoors inside. Plants are all that it can take to brighten up a room. Less so flowers, but more plants and green climbers like pothos. So get some funky wall planters or vases and you’re good to go.
Copper
Metallics have been on trend for a while now. But copper is the metal of choice this year. I like that it can be quite a subtle look if you want it to be. But it does make a statement if you want it to as well. I like the look of copper pendant lights, trinket boxes, candle holder, and accessories. It is just a subtle change that will complete the look of a room
Marble
We have seen plenty of marble around over the past year. Hands up who has a marble phone case or Macbook skin? Guilty – I’ve got like two of each. And we’ve all seen the flatlays, right? But this year the popular marble trend will be making it onto our walls too. So for a modern and minimalistic look, marble wallpaper could be your wallpaper of choice this year.
If you like the look of these trends, then it would be a great idea to get yourself down to Spring Fair next month. It is the number one gift and home trade event in the UK and the perfect place to see new trends in home, interiors and gifting before they hit the shops. I’m thinking there will be plenty of copper and hygge at some of the home and interior stalls.
Spring Fair is being held on the 5th – 9th February 2017 down at the NEC in Birmingham and there is a little bit more about the show here:
With the likes of Mary Portas, Baroness Karen Brady and the founder of Mulberry as some of the speakers, you know it is going to be a great event. So perfect if you’re looking to redecorate, want some hints and tips for DIY or just love gifting and home accessories. I myself am quite looking forward to visiting the stands of brands like Yankee Candle and Lola Rose Jewellery. Looking forward to some inspiration.
The best part about Spring Fair? It is completely free to attend. If you’re interested in going, then just make sure that you register here for your free tickets. I’ll be there – who else?!

I am LOVING the Hygge trend at the moment, it’s something i’ve been working really hard at incorporating into my living space over Autumn/Winter. You can’t beat that warm and cosy feeling when it’s cold and miserable outside! xx

I have been wandering what this Hygge thing was all about but I am so into the idea of being cosy and not coming out the house until summer! Loving copper too. Really wanting to do my home up a bit this year xx

I have a small copper milk jug that someone gave me and initially I didn’t know what to do with it (I don’t use a jug for milk!). It’s now on a bookshelf holding my pens and pencils, so it’s getting double usage – ornamental and functional.
Plants are on my hit list next time I venture to the garden centre / IKEA! I just love having them in my house, I just need to try and keep them alive better!
