I feel like I’m one of those people that you see on memes, where you think of 30 years ago and think of the 70s, but really, 30 years ago is now the 1990s! Being an 80s baby (90s kid and 00s teen) I love some nostalgia; I do think I grew up in some amazing times. Not only were there cool things going on in the music world, but also with technology and inventions.
As this article from Chums outlines, each decade is characterised by its unique contributions to music, fashion, technology, and social norms, all of which have left lasting impacts on the generations that experienced them.

The 1950s marked a time of post-war recovery and optimism. With the rise of rock ‘n’ roll, symbolized by icons like Elvis Presley, this era brought a new energy to youth culture. Fashion also reflected this change, with the introduction of rebellious leather jackets and poodle skirts. The 1950s laid the groundwork for the burgeoning consumer culture that would dominate the latter half of the century.
Moving into the 1960s, this decade is often remembered for its countercultural movements. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones defined the soundtrack of the era, while the fashion world saw the rise of miniskirts and bold, colorful patterns. The 1960s were a time of social revolution, with civil rights movements and anti-war protests challenging the status quo, making it a pivotal decade for political and cultural change.
The 1970s continued the trend of social change but with a heavier focus on individualism and self-expression. Disco music, with its glitz and glamour, became the defining sound, while fashion took on a more eclectic mix, from bell-bottoms to punk rock influences. The rise of environmental awareness and the feminist movement also marked the 1970s as a decade of expanding consciousness and personal freedom.
In the 1980s, consumerism and materialism reached new heights. This era was defined by the explosion of pop culture, driven by MTV and the music video revolution. Fashion became more extravagant, with big hair, bold colors, and power suits dominating the scene. Technological advancements, such as the introduction of personal computers and video games, began to reshape everyday life.
The 1990s brought a sense of global connectivity with the rise of the internet. Grunge music and fashion, characterised by flannel shirts and a laid-back attitude, countered the excesses of the 1980s. This decade also saw the rise of hip-hop as a dominant cultural force. Socially, the 1990s were marked by the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the digital age, setting the stage for the interconnected world we live in today. For me personally, it brings back a lot of memories with the top films that decade being Titanic, Jurassic Park and The Lion King. All of which I remember being at the cinema to see! The Lion King was the first film I ever saw in a cinema – lots of happy memories (I remember crying when Mufasa died)!
