Autumn is in full swing now that temperatures have dropped and the clocks have changed. In fact, it feels a lot more like winter at the moment (though I guess it is still technically autumn until December). And as fun as it can be to get wrapped up warm and enjoy all that the season has to offer (hello bonfire night), it can be a time when you’re skin can get worse than usual. I know it is the case for me anyway.
The cold weather can lead to dry skin, chapped lips, and sores where your skin gets dry and then cracks in the cold; such a wonderful time, right? š Which is why now is the time to take extra good care of your skin. And one of those ways can be using Epsom salts when you bathe, or when your feet need a warming soak after a long day.
Why Use Epsom Salts?
Epsom Salt is full of sulphates, which are extremely difficult to source through food, but will readily absorb through the skin. The salts are also really rich in magnesium, which helps your body’s magnesium levels to rise. And why do we need a good level of magnesium in our bodies? It isĀ important for many processes, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA. Which is why it is a great thing to use when you’re wanting to rest and relax, particularly after a hard day or exercise, as the salts can help your muscles and blood pressure.
There has also been research into sulphates and our bodies need from them, and research has shown that sulphates are needed for brain tissue, joints and the proteins that line the walls of the digestive system. Sulphates also stimulate the pancreas to help detoxify the body’s residue of medicines and environmental contaminants. So when you say you’re have a soak or a cleanse, it really is doing that.
Review
I am big into reflexology, and so I know how our feet mirror parts of our body. So being able to use these salts as a foot soak makes complete sense to me, as it can be a great way to absorb those minerals that our bodies need to get from the salts. I love taking baths too, so these have been really easy to use. Of course, it is going to be pretty hard for me to measure things like the magnesium levels in body after using them for a soak. But I know when I have used them I feel much more energised and refreshed, and muscles feel much less sore (hello brand new gym membership). I like that the packet that they come in resealable too, as it will last for quite a while.
For a foot soak:
- dissolve one cup of salts in a foot bath and soak for 30 minutes or more
- once finished, rinse with warm water and dry
For a bath soak:
- dissolve 2-3 cups in a full bath tub and soak for 30 minutes or more (the water should be around 39c)
- once finished, rinse with warm water and dry
So as you can see, they are easy to use and make part of your normal beauty routine. and for me, this time of the year is when my skin gets the most dry, because of the cold temperatures, and dry heat in the home.
Vie Epsom Foot and Bath Salts cost Ā£8.95 for 1.8kg from www.vie-healthcare.comĀ – the price is really reasonable for what you get, as it will last for quite a while. As shown above, you don’t need too much of it to make a difference.
Have you ever used Epsom salts before? I swear by them and the Vie brand has shown to work really well too. It would be great to hear what you think.
