What To Do When You’re Too Exhausted To Care For Aging Parents

It occasionally happens that the time comes when you feel simply too exhausted to take care of aging parents. After years of it, you just need a break.

Unfortunately, knowing what to do in a situation like this can be challenging. You aren’t always sure how to proceed?

That’s where this post comes in handy. We look at some of the things you can do when you have an aging parent and how you can manage what is otherwise a difficult situation.

Acknowledge Your Limits

The first thing you’ll want to do is recognise your limits. You’re not a machine, so you shouldn’t act like one.

Experts say that it is okay to accept that you can’t do everything, especially if you’re trying to hold down a job.

When you accept your limits, you’re better able to make clear-headed decisions without the same level of guilt. You can be rational about what you can and can’t do.

Seek Support From Friends

The next step is to see if you can get any support from your friends. Sometimes, they will come over and help you by making meals or doing some of the chores for you.

Even little things can make a significant difference. For example, they could go out grocery shopping for you, saving you all that time and energy.

Use Community Resources

Using community resources is also an option. For example, you might hire people to transport your elderly parents to various destinations or provide them with meal delivery services.

You’ll find numerous community resources in your area, so look in local directories to see what’s available. You never know what you might find.

Get Someone To Take Over Responsibilities

You can also just get someone to take over the responsibilities of caring for an aging parent for you. Services like VersaCare provide “live-in” care, which just means that they live with your parents and provide all the same services as you do.

These services are sometimes included in life insurance policies or as parts of government programs, which can reduce or eliminate the cost. Always check to see what’s available in your area.

Prioritize Self-Care

Another top priority when you just feel exhausted and like you can’t continue is to prioritise self-care. If you’re tired all the time, you can’t really do anything to help your parents, so you need to fill your own cup first (as the common expression goes).

For example, you could take regular breaks from caring and invite respite carers to come in and take over some of the responsibilities for you.

You could also do things like go for quick walks during the day or visit friends in the evenings when your parents are asleep.

Set Boundaries

Lastly, you might want to explore setting boundaries with elderly parents. If they are asking for too much, let them know and then tell them what you can provide.

Usually, they will respond because they want to keep you as their carer. If you don’t respond how you want, then also communicate that to them.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
